Garage Sale Queens

I've been going to garage sales for years and years. My mother is a master at garage sales and past down the knack for finding steals. Here in Denver there are like a billion garage sales every weekend  and if I ever have cash in my wallet (which is never the case), I stop and usually buy something.

Well today, I happened to have a little too much cash in my wallet and it was burning a hole, I tell you! So Katie Clark (one of my new rooommiiies) and I ventured out into the unknown,( ok, thats a lie cause we know Denver pretty well between the two of us), in search of some hardcore garage sales to feed our addictions.

Here's what the trunk looked like.

I realize this looks like a bunch of crap, but I assure you its all useful.. I think..

We ended up going to about 15 garage sales, maybe even more. We were those people driving really slow to see the address on the itty-bitty signs people put out. We both probably spent too much money, I know I did, but it was so worth the treasures we found. As they always say, " One man's trash is another man's treasure."

In between it all, we stopped by the Cherry Creek Farmers market and picked up a huge locally grown watermelon, carrots, and hummus fresh from Boulder!

We got home at about 12:30 after being out since 9am and dumped everything on the table..

Here's the breakdown of my treasures today..

#1 Pottery Barn glass cake stand with dome $20

I am honestly flabbergasted that I got this for $20. She was asking $25 and after a short haggle went to $20. She said she only used it twice and it is in perfect condition. When I got home I looked it up to see the real worth. The cake plate alone was $50 and the dome $30. Thats a 75% discount! What a steal! I'm even gonna make my own birthday cake for next week to put in it!

#2 Antique white shelf with hooks $4

While shopping today I was trying keep in mind the fact that I will be moving into my apartment in 2 months. I already have a shabby chic look going with the bedding and the white rod iron bed frame I bought off of Craigslist ( I'll talk about this later this summer!). I saw this and knew it was mine! I plan to re-paint, it's a little banged up. Originally marked for $5, got it for $4!

#3 Knick-Knacks for Apartment $5 ($1 ea)

Grabbed each of these for a buck. Love the porcelain teapot, colorful old books (in perfect condition) and brass necklace holder! Will be perfect for my shabby-chic look!

#4 Vintage kitchen tools $3

I thought these were cute little items to hang in the apartment kitchen considering both Hailey and I are baking and pastry students. We will see how it works out!

#5 Way too much Baking crap. $6

Apparently, when you get into the baking world, you become obsessed. Every single baking item I saw today I think I bought, exceptions for crappy lame stuff. You can never have too many Pyrex pie tins, sheet pans, and casserole dishes.

I had a thought of displaying them on a bookshelf with all my cookbooks in the apartment too. Its so sad that all the little dishes have to be put away. Why cant you showcase your most prized possessions.

#6 Plate Holder $1

I dont have any pretty plates to hang in here, mostly because we have plastic plates from target, but I had a thought about hanging it and using it as a cookbook holder. Nice thing is it wouldn't have to sit on the counter and take up space. We'll see how it works out tho..

#7 Scrabble $1

I like this game. So I bought it.

#8 Wall Art FREE!

Anyone who hangs out with me enough knows that I sing this song constantly. So when I saw this I started singing. Then the lady came up to me and said have it for free and I was like "Ok..!"
Maybe for the bathroom? Dont know yet!

I didn't want all my cool new items to sit in a box till I moved so I worked them into my room design now. I think it turned out pretty darn cute!

What do you think!? I love it!

What kind of deals have you guys found at garage sales, flea markets, or thrift stores?

Happy Hunting!

Home Sweet Home- Summer Edition

Look at these little men!

So I've definitely been meaning to write this post for the last 5 days and just never made time to get to it. Summer is in full blast and I trying to live it up as much as possible before I start nannying the boys 40 hours a week. EKK! If I have no hair by the end of the summer, its probably because I pulled it all out from these two 11 year olds. They moved onto sixth grade last night at a continuation ceremony at school.  As Mr. Love, one of my middle school teachers, used to say, once you hit sixth grade you become jaded and apathetic.. is that really what I have to look forward to all summer?!

This week I also finally moved into my "Summer Home." No, I don't have a fancy summer cabin down my the lake, although I wish.

Afte living out of my car and being practically homeless for a weekend I was so ready to move into "The Rosemary House" (what we call the house.. cause we live on Rosemary street, creative right?;))

I am just subletting a room from a girl who just needed a place holder for the summer so it worked out perfect. What's even better is she left her bed, desk, dresser and bookshelf! She also left a few pictures hanging, so out of respect I kept them up and worked them into my design!

Here it is!
Art: Pre-exisiting (its crooked!?)
Bedding: Garage Sale $15
Throw Blanket: Ross $ 10
Pillow: Garage Sale $2

Office nook

Cork board: Walmart $10
(decorated with free paint samples  and thumbtacks!)
The desk had no storage except for a little alcove in the back. So got creative and  took some old mason jars to place pens, pencils, etc. Best thing is they fit perfect and keep my desk from getting cluttered.

Mason Jars: King Soopers $15 for 20
I also used some vintage muffin tins I got at a garage sale for $2 last summer for the smaller desk items and hair ties.

Art/Dresser: Pre-exisitng
Cookbooks: All over!
Fan: Target $6 (SALE!)

I'm absolutely loving the closet space too. It's not quite a walk in but certainly big enough!

Basket: Target $8
Blanket:Handmade by me!

Storage Bins: Dollar Tree $1 ea.

I am loving the chance to decorate and organize all my stuff all over again. Obviously, I'm having fun with it.

Luckily, I dont have to put everything in my room and I can store a lot of it in the basement.. Look at all this crap!

And of course I needed a corny mirror picture of myself in my new room..

Until Next Time,

Our Kind Of Love

*Written on the plane to Denver yesterday*

In my short life span I have loved many people. I love my Mom, Dad, Jack and Chloe. I love others in my family. I love God. I love my friends. I have loved a few boys too.

I’ve felt love from all those people and I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what it means to love and be loved.  There is nothing better than to feel the warm fuzziness inside when you are told you are loved.

One thing I know is that I haven’t felt the type of love that a husband has for a wife and a wife for her husband. And when I see my parents together, I know that kinda love is something very, very special, especially when it has lasted through 20 years of marriage and 26 years of being together.

My parents have the most beautiful relationship and commitment to each other and today, they publicly proclaimed to continue the promise they made in front of a judge 20 years ago. Reciting those vows they said so many years ago.

It was a beautiful ceremony that had me, and everyone else, sobbing the entire time. (Doesn’t help that I am a hopeless romantic.)

My Dad is a very talented poet, although he doesn’t share that with anyone but our family, and he wrote my Mom a touching prose. He couldn’t hold back tears, either could my Mom. My Mom wrote a beautiful promise to my Dad confirming her undying love for him.

I look like I am singing.. just praying tho:)

I got the chance to say something to my parents too about how I can only pray for a marriage as wonderful as theirs. And how growing up surrounded by their love has molded me into who I am today.

Every one needs at least one ugly crying picture..

So many of our great friends and family came out to support my parents. Not just because my parents made it this far but also because this may be the last time we ever see them again.

I know I’ve said it before but they are moving to Iowa in 2 weeks and the ceremony was our last hoorah.

It was so special in service at church to be invited on stage to be prayed for. People who I have grown up with. People who have supported my family through every single trial and tribulation in the last 10 years.

Looking out onto all those people who love me and my family so very much broke me down. I had not come to terms with not coming back to this place I know as home yet. I broke down and sobbed for the first time.

We spent the next few hours in fellowship with everyone at our little reception. Which I have to brag about my Mom and my decorations for second. Check out how cute this turned out. Oh and how in love my parents are..

After it was all said in done, it was time for me to hop on a plane and go back to Denver. As I hugged my Mom goodbye, I lost it again and broke down sobbing.

That’s it here. This is no longer home. I may never see some of the people again. My safety net of church, friends, even my home for the past ten years will not be home any more. I didn’t want to have to leave. I wanted to spend those precious moments with my family.. I wanted to sleep in my room in my bed for one last night. I wanted to get the chance to cope with the fact that its not my reality anymore.

My Dad in his usual loving fashion immediately tried to change my flight so I could have one last night to be home. And even though it didn’t work out for me to stay, that’s ok.

As I sit on this plane back to my “home” I hold back tears.

I think of those people in Roseville that have molded me into the young woman I am now. And I just want to thank you from the very depths of my heart for every thing you have done for my family and I. You will never be forgotten. We will always love you like you have loved us. You have prepared us for this next chapter in our lives, and we couldn’t thank you more.

As easy as it can be to be loved it can be devastating to walk away from those who cherish you so deeply. But you know, its never goodbye, just until we meet again, whether that be later in life or in the golden streets of heaven.

Until Next Time, (wherever that may be),
